Deacon Frank Alvarez-Gil, was born in Havana, Cuba. His family fled from Cuba in 1960 when he was a toddler and lived in Cutler Bay. There he attended Holy Rosary School from kindergarten to eighth grade. He graduated from Immaculata-La Salle along with his prom date and future wife Alicia. Alicia and Deacon Frank were married by Father Mario Vizcaino in St Augustine Church, Coral Gables, FL.
He was a chemistry mayor at the University of Miami, where he earned his Medical Degree Deacon Frank did an anesthesiology residency at Jackson Memorial Hospital. After practicing in Tampa for 16 years, he returned to Miami to teach at the University of Miami School of Medicine in 2000. Deacon Frank also earned an MBA during his tenure as faculty at the medical school. He was one of the founders of Mercy Hospital’s Bayside Ambulatory Center where he has worked since 2003.
For his diaconate formation Deacon Frank attended St. Vincent de Paul Regional Seminary, and earned a Masters in Theology in May 2016. He was ordained by Archbishop Wenski in December of 2016 and has been a permanent deacon at St. Hugh Catholic Church since his ordination.
Deacon Frank and Alicia have three children and eight grandchildren. He has served in the United States Air Force Reserve and is a Third-Degree Knight of Columbus.
