Accelerated Reading Raiders Program

(Grades 3-5)

Program Overview:

The Accelerated Reading Raiders Program at St. Hugh Catholic School is designed for advanced learners in grades 3rd through 5th who demonstrate exceptional potential in English Language Arts (ELA). This specialized program provides an enriched, challenging curriculum aimed at fostering academic growth in a dynamic, fast-paced environment. Students who meet the criteria for this program will be engaged with advanced-level content, including complex reading and writing tasks, and are expected to perform at a higher level of cognitive demand.

The program is led by a Gifted Special Education teacher who thoroughly reviews each student’s assessment data, Terra Nova scores, and academic performance to determine eligibility. In addition to academic excellence, students must exhibit outstanding executive functioning skills, work habits, and exemplary conduct in order to qualify.

Eligibility Criteria:

To be eligible for the Accelerated Reading Raiders Program, students must meet the following criteria:

  • Demonstrated academic excellence in English Language Arts (ELA)
  • High performance on Terra Nova or other standardized assessments
  • Strong executive functioning skills (organization, time management, task initiation)
  • Excellent conduct and behavior grades
  • A readiness to work at an accelerated pace and tackle challenging material
  • Teacher Recommendation

Instructional Approach:

The Accelerated Reading Raiders Program is designed to push students beyond their current grade-level expectations. The program operates on a grade-level basis, where students in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades are grouped together for instruction in advanced ELA concepts.

Key elements of the program include:

  • Novel Studies: Students engage with a range of age-appropriate, thought-provoking novels that require them to analyze, interpret, and discuss complex themes and literary devices.
  • Top Score Writing: A writing program that challenges students to produce high-quality compositions, focusing on structure, clarity, and creativity.
  • Advanced Reading and Comprehension Tasks: Students read and discuss texts that require higher-order thinking skills, including critical analysis, inference, and synthesizing information across multiple texts.
  • Collaborative Learning: Students work collaboratively on projects and assignments that encourage them to refine their communication and teamwork skills, as well as apply their learning in real-world contexts.

Program Philosophy:

The Accelerated Reading Raiders Program aims to provide an intellectually stimulating environment where students can develop their skills in reading, writing, and critical thinking. The program is designed to challenge students while supporting them in their academic and personal growth. By engaging with complex material and rigorous tasks, students will cultivate a deeper understanding of literature, writing, and language arts.

The program emphasizes both content mastery and the development of critical executive functioning skills necessary for success in higher-level academic settings. These include self-regulation, responsibility, and initiative.

Goals:

The primary goal of the Accelerated Reading Raiders Program is to inspire and support students who are ready for more challenging ELA content. Students will be expected to deepen their understanding of literature, enhance their writing abilities, and apply advanced reading strategies. By the end of the program, students will have developed a strong foundation for future academic success and a love for intellectual exploration.
