Catholic Identity at St. Hugh

Faith in Action Through Prayer, Service, and the Arts

At St. Hugh, education is deeply rooted in Catholic values, encouraging students to live their faith in all aspects of their lives through prayer, community service, the arts, and various enriching religious activities.

Community Service

St. Hugh encourages students to embrace the spirit of service through various community projects. These include collections for local charities such as the Grove Outreach, the Sisters of Charity homeless shelter, Grove for Ghana, and the Mindo Project in Central America. Additionally, the 8th-grade students serve meals at the Sisters of Charity shelter, allowing them to engage directly with those in need. Another important initiative is Grove for Ghana, which focuses on supporting education and healthcare while providing the fund for the village to BUILD FRSH WATER WELLS in Ghana. These experiences cultivate empathy and a deep understanding of the global community.

Religious Celebrations and Prayer Services

Daily prayer is integral to school life, with students participating in morning prayers, the Angelus at noon, and prayers before each class. Special prayer services, such as Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, the Stations of the Cross during Lent, and the Procession of the Blessed Mother through the streets of the community, provide opportunities for reflection and a deeper connection to God. The 40 Hours of Adoration culminates in this beautiful procession, bringing together the school community in devotion.

Holy Days are celebrated with Masses, led by the pastor, that bring together students, families, and parishioners in worship. The All Saints Day Parade is a unique event where students dress as saints, celebrating the lives of holy figures who exemplify virtue and faith.

Catholic Virtues and Daily Religious Instruction

Catholic values are woven throughout St. Hugh’s curriculum. Daily religious instruction is provided by certified teachers who are passionate about nurturing students’ spiritual growth. The school highlights the Catholic Virtue of the Month through a video message from the principal and shares reflections in the weekly newsletter and newscast, helping students internalize these virtues in their everyday actions. Sacred Scripture on a daily basis is part of our curriculum for grades 5, 6, 7, and 8. All students has their own Bible and learns how to use it and reflect on the daily readings of the liturgy

Sacramental Preparation

Students at St. Hugh will receive the sacraments of First Reconciliation, First Communion, and Confirmation. These sacramental milestones are a key part of the faith journey, and the school provides the necessary spiritual guidance and preparation to help students fully embrace and understand the significance of these sacraments.

Musical Productions and Liturgical Participation

Music is an essential aspect of the faith life at St. Hugh. The annual Christmas musical production and performances at Masses during Advent and Christmas allow students to express their faith through music and drama, bringing the community together and celebrating the birth of Christ. These events allow students to share the season’s joy, strengthening their connection to the liturgical calendar.

Reenactment of the Birth of Jesus and the Passion of Christ

Students participate in a beautiful reenactment of the Nativity during Advent each year, portraying key figures from the Christmas story. This immersive experience allows them to connect personally with the event’s significance. Similarly, the Passion of the Cross is commemorated with a reenactment during Lent, allowing students to reflect on the suffering, death, and resurrection of Jesus.

Exposition of Relics of Saints

A unique and spiritually enriching experience at St. Hugh is the Exposition of the Relics of Hundreds of Saints. This sacred event offers students the chance to view and reflect on the relics of saints, gaining a deeper understanding of the sacrifices these holy individuals made in following Christ and the enduring power of their faith.

Weekly Masses and Retreats

Mass is celebrated weekly in the chapel for individual classes or in the church for the larger school community. Retreats are offered across all grade levels, giving students opportunities for quiet reflection and spiritual growth, nurturing a strong and lasting relationship with God.

Faith in Action Through Service

Service to others is a key way students at St. Hugh live out their Catholic faith. Students participate in food drives, Christmas toy collections, and outreach to the poor, putting the Corporal Works of Mercy into practice. These service opportunities teach students the importance of compassion, kindness, and the call to serve those in need.
