Catholic Values, Critical Thinking, and Technology Integration
Welcome to Computer Science Fundamentals, designed to nurture critical thinking, collaboration, and digital citizenship, all through the lens of Catholic values. This curriculum, based on Code.org, is aimed at students in kindergarten through fifth grade (K-5), blending engaging activities with moral responsibility, ethical behavior, and social awareness in the digital world.
Course Philosophy:
Our mission in this program is to empower students to use technology for good, building a foundation not just for coding skills but for responsible, thoughtful digital citizenship. We aim to:
- Promote collaboration and teamwork: Students will engage in both independent and group activities that develop communication skills, respect for others, and the ability to contribute meaningfully to shared goals.
- Enhance critical thinking: Encouraging students to approach problems thoughtfully, exploring different solutions, and applying logic to overcome challenges.
- Incorporate Catholic Values: Students will be encouraged to see the value of kindness, honesty, and integrity in all digital interactions, reflecting the teachings of Christ in the digital space.
- Foster good digital citizenship: From online safety to positive communication, students will learn how to be respectful, responsible, and ethical users of technology.
Course Description:
This class covers fundamental concepts in coding and computer science, including problem-solving techniques, algorithms, and interactive game creation, all while reinforcing the importance of being a positive online presence. Through practical lessons and group work, students will also be introduced to Catholic virtues, such as respect for others, service to the community, and honesty.
Grade-Level Focus:
- Kindergarten:
Students will learn basic programming concepts like loops and events through engaging activities that foster cooperation and perseverance. They’ll also explore internet safety, learning to make responsible choices online while building collaborative skills. - 1st Grade:
Students will deepen their understanding of programming with more complex puzzles and unplugged activities. The focus will be on collaboration, critical thinking, and online safety, while students practice these values both digitally and in-person. - 2nd Grade:
Students will create simple programs using sequencing, loops, and events. They’ll work on building positive online communities, reflecting the importance of kindness, respect, and sharing. They’ll also develop their skills in designing games and activities for others to enjoy. - 3rd Grade:
Building on previous concepts, students will work with nested loops, while loops, and conditionals to develop more advanced coding projects. The focus will be on ethical problem-solving and learning how to use technology responsibly, considering how their actions affect others. - 4th Grade:
Students will explore more interactive and complex projects, learning about nested loops, functions, and conditionals. They will also deepen their understanding of online safety and the importance of creating digital communities rooted in trust and respect. - 5th Grade:
students will explore Web Development and learn how to design and create web pages that meet a user’s needs, gaining hands-on experience in web design and programming. As they develop these pages, students will think critically about the impact of sharing information online and learn to be more thoughtful consumers of content. They will also tackle problem-solving challenges, improve their debugging skills, and collaborate in teams. Throughout the course, students will reflect on their responsibilities as digital citizens and the positive contributions they can make in the online world.
Classroom Rules & Procedures:
- Respect: Show respect for all teachers, staff, classmates, and equipment. This includes respecting others’ work and ideas.
- Integrity: Follow the St. Hugh Acceptable Use Policy, avoiding plagiarism and adhering to honesty in all digital work.
- Focus: Remain on task during class, respect classroom visitors, and be quiet when necessary.
- Safety: Always adhere to internet safety guidelines, ensuring a safe and respectful online environment.
- Catholic Values: Reflect Christ-like values in all interactions—treat others with kindness, be patient, and work collaboratively to solve problems.
Grading & Expectations:
- Assignment Submission:
Students are expected to complete assignments in Code.org and submit them online. A score of >90 is required to successfully pass assignments. - Participation:
Active participation in both individual and group activities is essential for success. Collaboration is key to fostering critical thinking and problem-solving skills. - Digital Citizenship:
All communications within the course must be positive, constructive, and respectful, aligning with both classroom rules and Catholic teachings on community building.
