Kindergarten Philosophy Statement at St. Hugh

At St. Hugh, our Kindergarten program is committed to fostering the intellectual, emotional, social, and spiritual growth of each child in a nurturing, Christ-centered environment. Through an integrated approach to learning, we offer an academically challenging curriculum that is rooted in Catholic values, focusing on the development of the whole child.

In Kindergarten, students engage in a variety of hands-on activities that promote cognitive and creative development in core subject areas such as religion, language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies. Our curriculum incorporates the use of technology, music, and fine arts to expand children’s learning experiences, allowing them to explore their creativity while developing essential academic skills. Physical education also plays a key role in promoting physical health and well-being, ensuring that children develop strong motor skills in a supportive environment.

Catholic teachings are at the heart of our Kindergarten program. Children are introduced to Scripture stories and Catholic traditions that emphasize God’s love, kindness, and compassion. Students are encouraged to follow the example of Jesus in all that they do, developing moral character and understanding the importance of service to others. Daily prayer, Mass celebrations, and liturgical events such as prayer services and seasonal traditions help children grow in their faith.

In addition to academic growth, we prioritize the development of social and emotional skills, helping children build positive relationships, develop self-regulation, and learn empathy. Through collaborative activities, both in the classroom and during school-wide events, children are taught to respect themselves, each other, and their environment.

The Kindergarten program at St. Hugh offers a rich, balanced, and supportive environment where children can thrive academically, socially, emotionally, and spiritually. By combining Catholic values with hands-on learning experiences, we help our students grow into compassionate, confident, and responsible individuals ready for the next steps in their educational journey.

St. Hugh Catholic School
Kindergarten Discipline Plan

At St. Hugh Catholic School, we believe that all children should grow and learn in a safe and loving environment. Our discipline plan helps our students develop important skills like kindness, listening, and making good choices, all while growing in their Catholic faith. We want every child to feel happy, respected, and ready to learn.

1. Positive Encouragement

We celebrate good choices! When a child shares, listens, follows directions, or shows kindness, we give lots of praise and encouragement. We use things like stickers, extra playtime, or special activities to help kids feel proud of their good behavior and keep making positive choices.

2. Consistent Routine

Kindergarten students thrive when they know what to expect. We follow a consistent routine every day. This helps children feel safe and helps them know what’s coming next. Clear routines also make it easier for children to stay focused and ready to learn.

3. Listening and Paying Attention

We practice listening and paying attention every day. Teachers will show how to listen carefully, and students are encouraged to practice these skills during lessons and group activities. We help children stay focused and ready to learn with fun activities that help them listen carefully.

4. Time Management

We help children learn how to manage their time by following our daily schedule. They learn when it’s time for learning, when it’s time to play, and when it’s time for snacks or other activities. Visual schedules and timers can help students understand how long to stay focused on each task.

5. Managing Emotions

Sometimes, kindergarteners may feel upset or frustrated. We teach them ways to calm down, like taking deep breaths, counting, or using special calming tools. This helps them learn how to handle their emotions and respond calmly when they feel upset.

6. Redirection

When a child makes a mistake, we gently guide them back to positive behavior. For example, if a child is not following the rules, we might suggest a different activity or ask them to try again. This helps the child understand what they should do and gives them a chance to make a better choice.

7. Modeling Good Behavior

Teachers are role models. We show students how to use kind words, solve problems, and manage our feelings. When we model patience, respect, and good behavior, children learn by watching and following our example.

8. Fair and Gentle Consequences

At St. Hugh Catholic School, we closely monitor each child’s behavior every day using a Behavior Chart. This chart helps children understand how their actions affect others and reminds them of the expected behaviors. If a child makes a mistake, they will receive gentle consequences to help them learn why their behavior wasn’t appropriate. For example, if a child is unkind, they may need to take a short break to calm down and think about their actions.
For more serious issues, such as hitting or hurting others, we intervene right away to ensure the safety of everyone. In these cases, we may need to have a more serious conversation and follow a specific plan to help the child learn how to make better choices.

9. Working with Families

We believe that regular communication with families is key to a child’s success. Teachers update parents daily or weekly about their child’s behavior and progress. If a child is having trouble making good choices, we work together with families to come up with the best plan to support the child at school and at home.

10. Teaching, Not Punishing

Our goal is to teach children how to understand and manage their emotions and behavior. We focus on guidance and support, rather than punishment, to help children learn how to make better choices. By using positive reinforcement and gentle redirection, we teach important social skills like kindness, respect, and self-control in a loving and supportive way. We want children to learn and grow, not feel punished, as they develop into responsible and caring individuals.

The discipline plan at St. Hugh Catholic School Kindergarten helps children grow into kind, responsible, and respectful individuals. We work together to create a safe and supportive environment where children can learn and grow in their faith, make good choices, and become the best version of themselves.
