Preschool Philosophy Statement at St. Hugh

At St. Hugh, our Preschool program is dedicated to nurturing the whole child through an integrated approach to early education. Our curriculum is designed to promote the spiritual, social, emotional, cognitive, and physical development of each child in a supportive, Christ-centered environment. Guided by Catholic values, we aim to create a space where three- and four-year-olds can grow in their relationship with God, deepen their understanding of His love, and learn to embody Christian principles of kindness, respect, and empathy.

Starting in the Pre-K3 classroom, we provide opportunities for learning through interactive play, which encourages curiosity and discovery. Our centers are thoughtfully designed to stimulate cognitive development through activities such as number recognition, counting, phonological awareness, fine and gross motor activities, and the use of technology. These hands-on experiences help build essential skills in a nurturing, developmentally appropriate setting. Children are also introduced to religious concepts through Scripture stories that emphasize God’s love and presence in their lives.

In the Pre-K4 classroom, the curriculum builds upon the foundation established in Pre-K3. Children continue to develop their social-emotional skills as they engage in daily classroom activities that focus on pre-reading, phonics, early math skills, and handwriting. Catholic teachings are woven into every part of the day, helping children understand the values of kindness, compassion, and forgiveness. Students actively participate in liturgical celebrations, such as Mass and prayer services, and are encouraged to share their faith in meaningful ways with their peers.

At St. Hugh, we recognize that every child is a unique creation of God. Our Preschool program strives to create a balanced, enriching environment where children are not only prepared for academic success but also for a life of faith, love, and service to others. Through play, prayer, and purposeful learning, we nurture each child’s emotional well-being, spiritual growth, and readiness for the future.

Discipline Plan for
St. Hugh Catholic School Preschool

At St. Hugh Catholic School, we are committed to fostering the whole child’s growth—academically, socially, emotionally, spiritually, and through the lens of our Catholic values. Our discipline approach is centered on teaching children the essential life skills of kindness, compassion, empathy, and friendship. We emphasize the importance of good behavior, respect for others, and the development of positive habits. This plan also focuses on strengthening listening skills, attention span, time management, and self-regulation of emotions. We believe structure and routine are fundamental in guiding children toward success as they learn to manage their emotions, make good choices, and become thoughtful, responsible individuals.

Our Catholic faith plays a central role in the development of our students, starting at a young age. By incorporating Catholic teachings into everyday activities and lessons, we help children understand the value of loving God and loving others. We introduce them to basic faith principles such as kindness, forgiveness, service to others, and gratitude, which align with our discipline practices. These teachings lay the foundation for children to understand the importance of behaving with respect and compassion, grounded in their faith.

Discipline Policies for St. Hugh Preschool:

1. Positive Reinforcement:

  • Good behavior is encouraged through praise for positive choices such as sharing, following instructions, listening carefully, and showing kindness.
  • Verbal affirmation and non-material incentives like stickers or special activities motivate children to continue making good choices and foster a sense of accomplishment.

2. Consistent Routine:

  • Preschoolers thrive in a structured environment, so we create consistent routines that give children a sense of security and predictability.
  • Clear transitions between activities help minimize frustration, build attention span, and ensure children know what to expect next, reducing anxiety and

3. Listening Skills & Attention Span:

  • A significant focus of our discipline plan is helping children develop their listening skills and attention span. We encourage active listening and focus during lessons and group time by providing engaging activities and instructions.
  • Teachers model how to listen attentively and follow directions, and children are gently guided to practice these skills during classroom activities.

4. Learning Time Management:

  • Children are taught the basics of time management through structured routines, where they learn to recognize different times of the day (e.g., snack time, learning time, playtime) and how to manage transitions between these activities.
  • Visual schedules and timers can help children understand how long they are expected to engage in each activity, supporting their ability to regulate their time effectively

5. Self-Regulation of Emotions:

  • Preschoolers are still learning how to manage their emotions, so we provide opportunities for them to practice self-regulation techniques.
  • When children feel upset, frustrated, or overwhelmed, we encourage calming strategies such as deep breathing, counting, or using sensory objects. This helps children learn to identify their feelings and respond calmly rather than acting impulsively.

6. Redirection:

  • When inappropriate behavior arises, we gently redirect the child’s attention to a positive activity or behavior, reinforcing appropriate responses in a calm, supportive way.
  • Offering choices helps children feel empowered and regain control over their actions, fostering a sense of autonomy and responsibility.

7. Modeling Behavior:

  • Teachers serve as role models by demonstrating appropriate language, tone, problem-solving skills, and emotional regulation.
  • By modeling patience, respectful listening, and managing our emotions, we teach children how to navigate their feelings and social interactions.

8. Logical Consequences:

  • Consequences for misbehavior are immediate, fair, and age-appropriate, ensuring that children understand the connection between their actions and outcomes.
  • In cases of aggression (e.g., hitting, biting), we immediately intervene to protect all children, helping the child understand the emotional impact of their actions and teaching alternative behaviors.

9. Open Communication with Families:

  • We value open, fluid, and ongoing communication with parents and guardians, sharing both positive behaviors and challenges.
  • Working closely with families ensures consistency in discipline strategies and helps us collaborate on specific techniques to reinforce positive behaviors at home and school.

10. Developmentally Appropriate Practice:

  • We recognize that preschoolers are still developing key social, emotional, and self-regulation skills, and our discipline approach is designed to be both nurturing and instructive.
  • Focus is placed on teaching, guidance, and emotional growth rather than punishment, ensuring children learn how to manage their emotions, build social skills, and develop self-control in a safe, loving environment.

The discipline plan at St. Hugh Catholic School Preschool is designed to support the whole child’s development by integrating Catholic values with essential life skills such as listening, time management, emotional regulation, and respect for others.
